“Don’t say you want to give, but go ahead and give!
You’ll never catch up with a mere hope.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
‘Tis the season for drawing near to the fires of hope, but much more than this, it is a time for inspiration and love in action.
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so?
It came without ribbons. It came without tags.
It came without packages, boxes or bags.
And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before.
What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store?
What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?”
As parents, as mentors to children and the people of this planet we have opportunity to be a part of this more. While the marketing gurus may work magic, the stores seem to beckon with the latest must-have gadget, the bobbles and trinkets dazzle us and pleas of our little ones tug at our heart sleeves and pocket books, this is a time for conscious consideration, creation, connection.
What say YOU?
What is this time of year about for you?
Is it a time of craze and confusion, fretting over what to buy for the guy (or gal) who has it all, biting your nails as the whispers of New Year collectors haunt your moments at the ’til? Or is this a time of tapping imagination, SEEing a community in need, creating moments in the twinkling of a fire or in the gesture of human kindness and contribution?
We decided years ago that we would do all that we could as a family to create magic in moments not things, to show our boys that this is a season of love, of giving, of seeing, of creating, of reveling in the miracle of hope and joy and contribution. And so … we begin our Advent, our preparation, our time of anticipation and creation and, above all, LOVE.
Each year we turn to our hearts and ask, what is it that we can give, make, offer, this year to live more Love in this community, this world…
This year we agreed that we wanted to do a countdown of sorts, one that didn’t include just placing an X on one more day gone. This year we decided to do…
CHISTMAS CHEER CREATION 2012
~ A minimum of 25 acts beginning December 1st that would brighten spirits, fill a need, show our love to the people around us and the community in which we live.
Tonight we brainstormed as a family about what those acts may be. Here is the beginnings of where this all may lead. We’ll let you know via stories and pics how it all unfolds over the next 25 days.
Ideas 4 Cheering the World:
~ Stand outside a store and give free hugs
~ Hand out doggy treats at a local kennel
~ Feed animals in our neighborhood (can you sense a desire to get a pet 🙂 here?)
~ Write love notes and tuck them in people mailboxes
~ Bake cookies and give them away to all who need them
~ Buy mitts and hats and keep them in the trunk and give them away to any and all who look like they need them
~ Put together our shoe box gifts (we do this each year) for families in need and deliver to local charity
~ The boys said, “Go to our bank account and take out $20 in change and give out to every person on the corner we meet in need. And when we run out of money, go back and get more from mom and dad.” 🙂
This is where we begin… let us see where it all leads?!
If this sparks a desire, a calling to act in your or if you are doing your own Christmas Cheer Creation, we would LOVE to hear from you. We are more when we share our ideas and our inspiration.
